JACK SPRAGUE QUOTES:
ON EXPECTATIONS FOR 2005: “The 2004 season set a solid
foundation for this Chevy Trucks team. As the season wound
down, we learned a great deal and feel like we built some
great momentum for this year. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
is so competitive. Every race there are probably 15 trucks
with a legitimate shot at winning. With the impound rule in
place now at every race, teams are going to really have to
be on their game when they unload at the track. I think it
will make the racing even more competitive and the fans will
really get their monies worth every race.
“We now have my old buddy Ron Hornaday as a member
of our Chevrolet Team Silverado. Not only does that add to
the competition on the track, but also increases the experience
and knowledge of racing in the NCTS and gives the Chevrolet
engineers and support team more resources to keep building
our factory program.
“We have another tool in our pitbox this year with
the addition of the second truck at Xpress Motorsports. Having
Regan Smith to give us additional feedback from testing and
practice is a huge benefit. We can experiment a little more
to see how something will react on the truck with the second
team in situations we may not want to take the risk on the
Chevy Trucks Silverado because of the need for consistency
in finishes to win races and the championship. Having an in-house
teammate will be a huge asset to how we can improve our performance.
ON DAYTONA RACE: “For some reason, I haven’t
been able to have good results from this race. In 2000 we
were involved in an early accident. In 2001, I had a decent
run and we finished 12th and went on to win the NCTS championship.
Last year we were involved in a wreck, got back out to run
laps for points and had to settle for 19th. Superspeedway
races are a roll-of-the-dice in many ways. Things happen so
quickly out there that you can get caught up in something
and taken out in a blink of an eye. Our goal is to have a
good solid run. Obviously we want to take our Chevy Trucks
Silverado to victory lane but we also know that comes down
to the end and who is your partner in the draft. The key is
to stay in the lead pack, steer clear of trouble, give your
crew the feedback they need during the race to make changes
that will help at the end when everyone is dancing with partners
to go to the front and get the win.
“One thing that is in everyone’s mind is that
to be a serious contender for the championship this year,
you can’t afford to have any bad races. Starting the
season with a DNF puts you in the hole when it comes to the
points race. Sure, we have 24 more races to work our way back
to the top of the standings but if someone gets out of Daytona
with the win or a strong top-five finish and then puts together
three or four more strong runs in a row, you are already have
a huge mountain to climb if you had a bad Daytona race. It
puts more pressure on the team, the pitcrew and the driver
to leave Daytona with a solid finish. To be a contender for
the championship this year, that is what is going to have
to happen.”
