Sprague Continues Momentum With Second-Place Finish at Dover
DOVER, DEL. (June 2, 2008) --- Jack Sprague and the No. 2 American Commercial Lines (ACL) Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet team recorded their second runner-up finish of 2008 Friday in the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Sprague’s run moves him up five positions in the point standings to sixth place only 65 markers behind first.
“I really thought we had the win locked up after the second-to-last run,” said Sprague. “But after our last pit stop my truck got way too tight to make a run on (race winner Scott) Speed. I wanted to win worse than anyone, but our team is really gaining momentum. (Crew chief) Ernie (Cope) and the guys did a good job today. We had awesome pit stops and it was a really good points day for the No. 2 American Commercial Lines Chevrolet. We are eventually going to get a win. We just came up a little short.”
Starting from the sixth position, Sprague complained that his truck was tight in the middle of the corner. The team came to pit road on lap 52 for their first scheduled pit stop. The No. 2 ACL team took four tires, fuel and made an air pressure adjustment. A solid 15-second pit stop gained Sprague two positions as he returned to competition in the fourth spot.
The No. 2 ACL team brought the truck down pit road for their second scheduled stop during a caution period on lap 95. One more air pressure adjustment was all Sprague needed. After 20 laps, he was the fastest truck on the track moving up to the third position.
During the final pit stop of the day on lap 133 Sprague came down pit road for four tires and fuel. Another solid 15-second pit stop helped Sprague leave pit road in the fifth position. However, the four competitors in front of Sprague decided to either stay out on track or take two tires.
As the laps wound down, the final caution flew at lap 172. On the restart, Sprague’s KHI teammate Ron Hornaday was experiencing motor problems allowing Sprague to race three-wide into turn one to jump into the second position. Sprague’s truck again went to the tight side and he was unable to catch the leader for the win. Sprague’s second-place finish matches his career best at Dover International Speedway.
